Key How

Key How, Eskdale, Cockermouth, West Cumbria and West Lakes, UK

Set in the picturesque village of Eskdale, Key How Cottage is a fantastic cottage which has recently been renovated and refurbished. Handy for both the pub and the village shop, there are also hundreds of walks right from the front door either on the fells or along the banks of the River Esk, which flows from Scafell at the top of the valley down to the estuary at Ravenglass, an old fishing village complete with a ruined Roman bath-house.

The river has natural pools for swimming and is a popular place for canoeing and fishing. The famous Ravenglass & Eskdale Miniature Railway runs along the valley, its steam trains making the leisurely seven-mile journey down to the sea - Irton Road station is just ten mins walk from the Cottage.

There are five pubs in the valley (the Bower House Inn is just a five minute walk away), all welcoming children and serving real ales and a wide choice of good food. The village shop is just a ten minute walk away and sells a comprehensive range of goods, including groceries, fresh fruit and vegetables, food to go, alcohol and newspapers. There is some reception for mobile phones on the Orange network.

At Key How the front door leads to the sitting room with its open fire, TV, DVD and CD player.

From the sitting room is the kitchen is beyond the dining room and is fully equipped with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer & washing machine. There is plenty of storage space here. The kitchen door leads to the back yard which has an outbuilding where you can store bikes.

The cottage has two bedrooms upstairs: one with a double bed and one with a set of bunks. There is also an upstairs bathroom with bath and electric shower above, sink and toilet.

At the front of the cottage is a small garden which has fantastic views of the Lakeland fells.

Directions to Key How

From the South

Leave the M6 motorway at junction 36 for Kendal/Lakes.
Follow signs to Barrow (A590).
Turn right to Workington (A5092) 3 miles beyond Newby Bridge and follow this road to Broughton-in-Furness (10 miles).
Turn right to Ulpha before the River Duddon (3/4 mile beyond Broughton).
After 4 miles turn left in Ulpha village to the steep hill signed Eskdale.
Follow the fell road to Eskdale (6 miles).
Keep going past the George IV pub, over the ratty bridge and into the centre of the village.
Go past the village shop, down the hill and round the big bend.
Just before you get to the Bower House Inn, you will see a row of white terraced cottages on your right hand side. Number 4 is in the middle.

Please note: if you have satellite navigation, the recommended route often appears to be over Wrynose and Hardknott passes which can be very lovely but are incredibly steep (England's steepest road with gradients of up to one in three), windy and narrow. Following this route is shorter in distance but certainly not quicker than the directions shown above.

The postcode for Key How is: CA19 1TD
