No more than a few dozen houses, Applethwaite is the most sought-after village around Keswick, and it's not hard to see why. The village is a sleepy little hamlet, more reminiscent of Madeira than England, with hens, ducks, goats and sheep wandering over the lane. And the lane isn't going anywhere else; the main road by-passed Applethwaite long before bypasses were thought of. So children and pets are pretty free to wander. Beside the lane riotous gardens bloom azalea, rhododendron, every king of shrub hugging the hillside. Streams cascade down Skiddaw on their way to the River Derwent, and tumble merrily beside the road and farmsteads.
And yet, you're only a mile and a half from Keswick, with all it has to offer. You can walk there along the road, or on one of the many paths cutting through the village, on their way up to Skiddaw, Latrigg, or into the woods around.
The house itself offers very gracious living for up to eight people, ideal for two families sharing or for a holiday with the grandparents. The kitchen is lovely, and sharing breakfast there is a great treat; perhaps for dinner you'll prefer to dine in state in the 20 foot dining room with the Victorian fireplace; or maybe you'll just grab a snack in front of the television in the sitting room, with a roaring coal fire if you like (coal provided). On a sunny afternoon or evening there is nowhere better than the sun lounge or the patio, with a gin and tonic and the world waiting to be put to rights, while the children play in the big garden.
Upstairs there's plenty of space for all. Lying in the double bed in the master bedroom, with windows to south and west, looking out over the fabulous view guarantees a good start to any day. The other three bedrooms have twin beds. Two bathrooms give you the option of bath or shower plus a downstairs loo.
